Why Schengen Visas Get Refused (and How to Reapply)

A refusal is frustrating, but it's rarely random. Almost every Schengen refusal traces back to a handful of fixable problems.

The most common refusal reasons

• Unclear or unconvincing purpose. Your itinerary, bookings and cover letter don't tell one consistent story.
• Weak proof of funds. Your bank balance looks too low for the trip, or large sums appeared suddenly and look "parked."
• Weak ties to your home country. The consulate isn't convinced you'll return — no stable job, property or family commitments.
• Insufficient or wrong insurance. Missing the €30,000 minimum, or a policy from an unrecognised provider.
• Inconsistent documents. Dates, names or amounts that don't match across your file.
• Previous immigration issues — overstays or prior refusals that aren't addressed.

How to read your refusal letter

The consulate gives a coded reason. Match it to the problem above: a "justification for the purpose and conditions" code points to your itinerary and ties; a "means of subsistence" code points to your funds. Fix the specific issue, don't just resubmit the same file.

Reapply or appeal?

• Reapply if you can quickly strengthen the weak area — there's no waiting period, but you pay the full fee again. Don't rush in with the same documents.
• Appeal if you believe the decision was wrong; you usually have 30–60 days, stated in the refusal letter, and there's normally no extra consulate fee.

The winning move is almost always a stronger, more consistent application — better funds evidence, clearer purpose, and solid proof you'll come home.
