A Schengen visa lets you travel across 29 European countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Here's how to apply in 2026 without wasting the non-refundable fee.
Step 1 — Work out which embassy to apply to
Apply to the country that is your main destination (where you'll spend the most days). If you're spending equal time everywhere, apply to your first point of entry. Applying to the wrong country is a common reason for refusal.
Step 2 — Book your appointment
Most consulates outsource appointments to VFS Global or TLScontact. Book early — in peak season, slots fill weeks ahead. You'll choose a date to submit documents and give biometrics (fingerprints + photo).
Step 3 — Prepare your documents
A standard file includes:
- A passport valid 3+ months beyond your trip, with two blank pages
- The completed application form and a biometric photo (35×45mm, white background)
- Round-trip flight reservation and hotel bookings for your whole stay
- Travel insurance with at least €30,000 medical coverage
- Proof of funds — recent bank statements showing you can support the trip
- Proof of ties to your home country (job letter, property, family) and a cover letter
Step 4 — Pay the fee
The visa fee in 2026 is €90 for adults and €45 for children 6–12 (free under 6). Some nationalities pay a reduced €35 under bilateral agreements. VFS/TLS add their own service charge, so the real total usually lands between €150 and €250 per adult.
Step 5 — Attend, submit, and wait
Submit in person, give biometrics, and track your application online. Standard processing is about 15 calendar days, longer in busy periods. Never book non-refundable flights before your visa is approved.
