From late 2026, many travellers who currently enter Europe visa-free will need an ETIAS authorisation first. Here's what it actually is.
ETIAS is not a visa
ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is an online pre-travel authorisation for citizens of visa-exempt countries (those who can already enter the Schengen Area without a visa). It's similar to the US ESTA: a quick security pre-screening linked electronically to your passport.
If you currently need a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to you — you keep applying for the visa as normal.
Cost and validity
- €20 per application
- Valid for up to 3 years (or until your passport expires)
- Lets you enter for short stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period
Exempt from the fee: travellers under 18 and over 70, and family members of EU/EEA citizens.
How to apply
Apply online, through the official EU website or app only — most applications are approved within minutes to a few days. Beware of copycat sites charging inflated fees; the official price is €20 and you don't need a middleman.
